Help!!! Right carb puking gas!
« on: July 05, 2010, 02:41:50 AM »
Hey all. My Sunday ride was cut short today when I stopped to take some photos off a bridge over the lovely Wisconsin river and came back to a puddle of gas and a steady trip from the right carb. The hose from the bottom of the float bowl was steadily dripping gas at a constant near stream.

Is this a stuck float pin that's not shutting off  when the bowl is full?

I'm just now getting the carb off, but man, I haven't been inside of one of these things in years so any help would be greatly appreciated.

Took the carb off, all look fine inside and the pin seemed to close easy enough when I moved the floats up. Maybe it was just stuck? Put it back together and fired it up and all ran fine, but I didn't actually ride it. Revved it a bit in the driveway, shut it off and no drip, so don't know if it's okay or not. Will know for sure next week when I try for another ride, but if anyone has any tips would appreciate hearing them.

Yes, chances are your needle and seat assemblys are in need of replacement.  Turn your petcock off whenever the engine isnt running for now.

If you forget some day........the left cylinder may fill up the case and then you get the fun of shooting a quart of fuel out of the lower belly of the left exhaust pipe too !!!!

Fun times !  Fun times !    ;D

The petcock only seems to have Reserve, On and Prime... no Off! But it seems to not be leaking now after taking it apart, but I didn't really do anything. It has new pins the mechanic put in, but they were h*nda parts. He says they fit perfectly, though.

Ha,ha it's sounds like it's hapened to you as well.I had to take off left hand carb insert a tube into crankcase use the trigger of a squirty bottle to pump out fuel.I'n gonna fit a TZR125 4DL Fuel tap as you can turn that off and looks same.

I have had this on both carbs, they managed to vomit 16 litres of fuel over the garage floor in one night and I had a bucket load of white crystals all over the carb overflows and back of the engine, took weeks for the smell to go :( .

I replaced both float needles and seats and this made a massive difference. I also found the petcock was allowing fuel to pass when the but was off. Found the membrane was fine so simply stretched out the spring a bit in the petcock and this has stopped the fuel passing when off.

The bike is perfect now and doesn't leak any petrol at all.

My solution was to pull the sparkplugs and roll the engine over very slowly for a while (If the cases are full of fuel, and you kick it over hard, you might blow the crankseals out).

Then gradually kick the engine over faster and faster.  This fills the belly of the pipes with fuel.  Then if your ambitious, you pull the pipes off and empty them.  If your impatient or lazy, you try to start the bike after several near starts and many plug changes.

Once it starts.......be sure the exhaust is pointed in a good direction !!!!!!!!    It will shoot stuff 30 meters out the exhaust...........and if thats your wifes flower garden , YOU ARE SCREWED !!!!!!!

As for the petcock, yes, there is no off position........and since I could not find a source for a new rubber distribution disc on my 1KT , I have a inline fuel shutoff valve from a snowmobile on mine.

If you do this modification you'll remove the vacuum leaking problem and get and off position.
O-Ring seal can be ordered from Yamaha or Triumph because I have been facing the leaking fuel tap at our 2 stroke meeting and talking about with Steve from Webbs and he knows the part number by memory.

Law52, I am sure there is an aftermarket supplier mentioned on the forum that can get float needles but I got mine from Yamaha. Found one that had been on the shelf for ten years and gave a tenner for it but the other had to be ordered in, I think something like £20. From memory I also replaced the pilot jets, again got them from Yamaha.

Hi,

Most of the time when it is leaking petrol is that the O'ring seal around the brass valve seat is cracked.
Not available alone from Yamaha but can be ordered from Solex carburettor shop. Don't have the part number but at the French RD500LC club we sell them for 1€.

Maybe a bit of cross referencing !!!!

You need 2(1 for each carb)float needle valve assemblies which you can get from the website below.I bought 2 sets for my 1KT(same as 2MA)which are much cheaper than genuine yamaha ones and are japanese made.

Just emailed for the parts. The right one is still leaking. The mechanic who did the rebuild on my engine used parts they had from a h*nda. He said they fit perfectly, and he is really good and did a super job on the engine, so I do trust him very much. It's a good shop. I'll let him take a look this week, but I'll still order the parts recommended above to be sure to have the right ones.

I get all my carb bits from nrp-carbs check the web, I think my float valve kits cost about £10 and the float bowl gaskets are quite cheap.  The web site is still under construction after a couple of years but if you email andy he gets back to you in about 48 hours,
