Power Valve
« on: July 28, 2010, 12:45:27 PM »
Hi Guys;

I have read some where on the forum that there are marks you use to set up your power valve correctly. I had a look at my 3ma1 servo motor but there are no marks. How do I go about setting up my power valve correctly?

Alignment is done at the [/i]cylinder[/i] end. Switch on ignition, let PV's cycle, line up the hole in the arm on PV cable wheel with the one in the cable spool housing behind it if required using the cable adjusters. Leave at least .5mm play in the cables (you'll hear the PV servo straining if they are too tight)  For greater accuracy of set-up or to check for misalignment between cylinders remove the pipes and poke a finger down the port and feel for the PV to be flush with the port roof.

Thanks Warwick; thought the purpose of the hole you are refering to was to insert a srew driver to remove the plastic spool to which the cables are attached. I used to make my own marks when I had the exhasts off. I found that with this specific bike we had the pv set up incorrectly and we were struggling to get the bike to rev to 10 000 rpm. We started playing with the pv cable settings and it makes a huge diffrence both ways(increases and decreases revelutions). We now get up to 11500 in first and second gear. I also find that on lower revs you get beter torque but you loose on top end rev range?

Yes, if the PV isn't set to fully open at high revs you may well get a stronger bottom end, but less power at the top. Effectively you are altering the fully open size of the exhaust port. The best top end power position is to allow the PV to open fully obviously.
