Stupid kid in an SUV knocks down my TZR then speeds off

So this evening I'm in this meeting with a community group I'm active with and my TZR is parked on the street in a legal parking spot, pointing out toward the streets at a 90 degree angle with the sidewalk.

From the restaurant downstairs a woman comes in and asks if someone in our meeting has the blue motorcycle out front. Yes, I tell her. It just got hit by a truck. Great!

I go out there and pick it up, not much damage, one mirror scraped up good, but scratches on the left lower where it hit the ground, then a silencer is a bit banged on the right side where the kid hit it. Also the racing seat is scratched up where it looks like the truck made contact.

Eight people in the restaurant saw the whole thing, including the kid and his girlfriend look back at the bike for enough time to think about stopping and doing the right thing, but then speeding off. They got the tag number so a police report was filed and I'll have his information in a few days.

He'll be charged with "hit and run", surprised me because I thought that meant injury involved, also leaving the scene of an accident and failure to report an accident.

I plan on filing for damages through court, but have no idea how to get an estimate, since like the pipe silencer, for example, I have no idea where those pipes came from and even when I posted them here no one seemed to know. How do you go about putting a value on a totally unknown silencer?

One mirror, one hand blister was busted, and then the left lower fairing. Also, the seat is totally custom and he scratched that up too.

I'm thinking of just telling him for $500 I won't take him to court and run up two grand on him.

The kid fled the scene. He has a lot to lose, and it's your responsibility to teach him to do the right thing next time.

A woman on whoms house I was working backed into my 3XV and knocked it over into the curb, smashing the upper fairing.  I only asked her for $500, and she was 100% honest with me.

Yeah, I'm thinking 1K is more like it. And you're right. He's a punk ass kid for hitting it and then speeding out of there. Maybe I can squeeze his bitch girlfriend for a few bucks too!

Actually, from one the guys up in Canada, I have a complete set of bodywork in my basement ready for a custom paint job over the winter, complete with mirrors and turn signals, another solo seat I found on ebay a long time ago, and a gas tank (need a cap and key combo for that), so I'm really set bodywork.

But I do want the kid to pay for hitting it and then leaving. I'm definitely going to make him sweat.

Hope he dreams of being attacked by a swarm of TZRs tonight!

I like the pipes it's got on it, the way they sweep up and tuck up close below the seat. Do wish I knew where they came from, though.

What do Swarbrick pipes look like? Check the web site but no TZR pics.

Thats bad news Skip, on the brighter side you could have been sitting on it at the time 

I'm sure we've had a similar post about insurance claims on a damaged TZR (IIRC a woman on a push bike pulled out and forced the forum member to drop his bike also a 2MA) he had a hell of a time finding quotes to fix it.

I think your best bet is to get estimates for OEM stuff from Yamaha, this way you know you will get more than enough to cover your costs  and the estimates come from the bike manufacturer not an unknown aftermarket source.

Ash, OEM is a good idea, but what about the custom solo seat? How would I price that or get a quote on that? I think I'm going to go to the shop that has been doing the work on the bike. I really like them, and they've done a great job rebuilding the motor and tuning it up. See if they can help me assemble an "official" quote to repair it.

Or I can get a list of parts from the Canadian dealership that has the TZR microfiche.

One way or another, I'm going to sweat this kid bad for driving off leaving my bike laying on it's side next to the curb.

Yup, full price OEM yamaha part quotes all the way.....and full shop labor estimate to fix it all.

Should amount to a nice 2008 Plasma blue Ninja 250 R sitting in your driveway, as the "Loaner" bike for your buddys to ride !!

Good one, Northland! but I've got my eye on another 87 TZR up in Canuckland right now. Hope to have it 60 to 120 days.

Went to the shop that has been doing all the work on my bike, they've been awesome, and the mechanic who handles my bike said just make a real detailed list of everything banged up, scratched, bent, etc, and he'll put it all in a nice formal estimate.

We'll probably be looking at 1500 to 2000 USD for everything on the estimate.

Hey, Northland, do you bring your TZR down for the Slimy Crud Run? I'm definitely going to have mine at the next one. Our bikes are what that thing is supposed to be about, I hear, cool old cafe racers and such. But the last few years I'm told it's all diesels and Harley's.

Time to remind those people what sport bikes are all about!

Also, need to replace silencers. That could be tricky since my pipes are totally unknown, but I need to at least price a silencer for the claim. I just saw one on one of the sites but now can't find it. Anyone gotta link?
