Thanks guys. The vacum pipe from the fuel tap to the rear carb is connected and all brand new pipe, so still cannot understand what the issue is with the vacum. Everything is new & connected.

From the sound of things for the second issue I'll need to take the front carb off and apart. Is this easy to do, and does the tank need to come off again with all the air filters? Also can you help identify what the pilot circuit or choke pick up is. Is this the small hole in the carb bowl? I'll get the carb off & give it a clean. Hopefully that will fix the starting issue, but the vacum one is still a mystery.

Good fun these carbs  :'(

I had a problem with my carb's as well after stripping them.
Once i reset everything using the jetting chart that was posted "3xv4 carb setting's?"
it has run like a dream since starting first time everytime. Assuming your bike has standard jet's of course.

Or you could go back to std jetting and work from there.

The small hole is at the end of one of the arrows can't remember which one but your see it. What you want is some lock wire and a can of carb cleaner to flush it out. Once you can get carb cleaner flowing through the hole it's clean. And your starting problem will be a thing of the past, very common for that hole to block.

The choke pick up hole is at the tail end of the bottom arrow.
A dip tube from the top half of the carb goes into the hole on the edge of the float bowl, this tube is the choke fuel supply.
At the bottom of the float bowl half covered by that arrow tail is the place the blockage will be if there is a blockage.
Hope this helps.

Thanks for the photo and the explanation. I'll take the front carb on this weekend. Hopefully I can remove the float bowl without having to take the carb off the bike. Hopefully that will resolve the starting problem.

I'll also remove the smaller pipe that runs from the fuel tap to the carb for the vacum issue. So with the fuel tap set to ON nothing should come out until I suck on the pipe? If that does work, which I suspect it will as it a new tap is there anything else I can check on the rear carb to see why the vacum is not being created sufficently? Its a new pipe & circlips & a tight fit at each end.

Any idea?

Cheers  :-\

Hi

Finally got time to strip it all down. The front carb bowl was very blocked, and after many attempts managed to clear the choke fuel pick up. It now starts first time ever time!!!

Thanks to you all for your help on this.

Despite  replacing just about everything it still only runs well when riding is the fuel tap is set to PRI. It ticks over fine on ON, but when riding on ON it feels like your running out of petrol & need to go to reserve (even on a full tank).

If you have any other ideas (new tap already, new hoses everywhere, fuel comes out in a suck the small pipe from the fuel tap) then I'll give it a go...if not it shouldn't cause an issue when riding I think. Just a bad idea to leave it on PRI when parked.

Cheers

Angus

Still sounds like youre not pulling enough vacuum from the carb assuming its flowing fast if you suck the vacuum pipe. If you disconnect the vacuum pipe while the engine is idling the revs should raise. If it doesnt I think you may have a blockage in the vacuum circuit.

What about the o-ring seal around the outside of each of the brass float needle seats, have you checked to see if they're split / perished on the offending carb ?  That would allow fuel to bypass the float needle into the float bowl causing the flooding.

If you're in the U.K., I sourced new o-rings from ALLENS PERFORMANCE Ltd. in Bingham, Notts.  Their phone No. is :-  01949 836733.
The o-ring Pt. No. you need is :-  616-23002.  Two o-rings plus postage cost me £ 4.61 back in January '09.
You can order on-line, just "google" Allens Performance, then look in MIKUNI carb spares, & take it from there.

Hate to bring up an old thread but has anyone else found a replacement o-ring (aside from the above) w/out buying the oem float valve-needle set (2MA-14107-28-00)? The set is over $60 each here in the US.

Hi,

a replacement o-ring (aside from the above) w/out buying the oem float valve-needle set (2MA-14107-28-00) could be found using SOLEX carburetor part but I've no part number to give.

The RD500LC sells them for French members but I can not get the part number.

My rear carb started overflowing - the cause being float seat ring perished - and I found an overhaul kit for $32 here: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=130414296567&viewitem=&sspagename=ADME%3AB%3AEOIBSA%3AGB%3A1123

Also...

I can't find where to connect the fuel vacuum line to the carb, can anyone post a picture?

Thanks!

Don't have a pic or a carb to hand, but you will find a brass stub on the intake side of the upper cylinder carb - hole right through into the carb venturi to create the required vacuum from the intake pulses.

Could you detail exactly what those rebuild kits include?

Cheers!

I bought the same kit last week. Not OEM, but great price and I don't need all of the parts. primarily after the o-ring, bowl gasket, seat & needle. The rest will be kept for spares.

One more thing, the seller said you get one of everything in the picture (per kit ordered).
